SHAH ALAM, 1 JUNE 2012 : An extraordinary increase in voters at Kampung Pandan Dalam since 2007 is raising concerns of possible electoral fraud.
Chempaka state lawmaker Iskandar Samad, who is alarmed by the development, said three streets in the Malay village - Lorong Kemajuan 1, Lorong Kemajuan 2 and Lorong Cantik - saw a combined increase of 335 voters within four years.
Some 28 homes which only had between one and eight registered voters in 2007 today house between 10 and 43 voters.
"The existing residents don't know who these new voters are," Iskandar said at a press statement.
The Selangor executive councillor is also concerned that the same phenomenon may be happening in other areas in his constituency.
Iskandar said the Election Commission (EC) should conduct a detailed investigation and find out the individual or party responsible for registering these "phantom voters".
Apart from Iskandar, other Pakatan Rakyat politicians like Klang member of Parliament Charles Santiago and Subang Jaya assemblyperson Hannah Yeoh have also voiced their concerns about a spike in the number of voters in their respective constituencies since 2008.
Election watchdogs including the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) and Tindak Malaysia have repeatedly called on the EC to clean up its electoral roll before the 13th general election.
However, EC chief Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof had maintained that Malaysia has the "cleanest" electoral roll in the world. But a survey carried out by Merdeka Center just days before the Bersih 3.0 rally on April 28 found that 92 per cent of the 1,019 respondents polled want the electoral roll to be cleaned up before the election - SELANGOR TIMES.
